WMDT 47 ABC: Comptroller calls for statue to come down

EASTON, Md. – Some state leaders are calling for the Talbot Boys statue in Easton to come down. “I believe it’s a disgrace, and it’s in one of our state’s beautiful places. Talbot County – which I love, I go there often – Easton, St. Michael’s, Oxford. These wonderful towns are bustling with visitors every weekend,” said Comptroller Peter Franchot.

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot tells 47ABC that the statue standing in front of the Talbot County court house is propaganda romanticizing white supremacy. “I think people are confused about the Talbot Boys monument right outside the court house. This is not something meant as a memorial to Confederate soldiers in Talbot County right after the Civil War. This was put up in 1916 at the height of the United States era that they call Jim Crow laws,” said Franchot.

Franchot says that it sends a threatening message to minorities. “This was a coded message to African Americans to not challenge the status quo under the rule of law and in my humble opinion as the Comptroller of the great state of Maryland this monument has no value, historical, educational, or otherwise,” said Franchot.

Franchot tells 47ABC that in light of the George Floyd protests across the country, now is the perfect time to remove the statue. “It’s pretty obvious that it’s at a crisis point in the country and when you look at it closely you realize that there’s a lot of justification for demonstrators who are going out to protest. I think it’s a perfect opportunity in a small way to do something to remove this blemish,” said Franchot.

The comptroller says that he hopes other local leaders will help by stepping in and calling for the statue’s removal. “This is not a memorial to the South or even to the Maryland residents that fought for the South. This is a Jim Crow type neon sign to minorities to stay in their lane and for goodness sake don’t come to the court house and seek equal justice in the law,” said Franchot.

47ABC did reach out to the Save the Talbot Boys Facebook group, as well as multiple Talbot County council members. They refused to comment.
