Tax filing fees
The Editor’s Notebook incorrectly stated that the Comptroller’s Office charges a processing fee for electronic tax filings of state returns (The Capital, Dec. 10).
While I am grateful to the editorial board for highlighting the exciting changes that are forthcoming after my agency’s new, state-of-the-art tax filing system – COMPASS – is fully integrated, it is vitally important that taxpayers have the most accurate information, especially as we head into the 2019 tax filing season.
Filing state returns through our online, secure, I-File system has, and will always be, free of charge to Maryland taxpayers. Every year, more than 100,000 taxpayers utilize our online portal, and nearly 4,000 I-File returns are processed at our 12 regional branch offices, where taxpayers can receive free state tax return preparation services from our agency professionals.
I am especially pleased that during my administration, we have seen a significant increase in electronic filings, with more than 90 percent of Marylanders doing so on an annual basis. Thanks to our investments in technology and human capital, we lead the nation in the efficiency of tax processing and refunds disbursement, while continuing our award-winning efforts to protect Marylanders from the consequences of tax fraud and identity theft.
Our free, secure, and convenient I-File System is just one of the many taxpayer services that my agency offers. COMPASS’ integration will further build upon our agency’s already nationally-recognized operations, and enable us to more effectively fulfill our mission to deliver respectful, responsive, and results-oriented customer service.
