The Bay Times and Record Observer: Franchot, Frosh, Cardin coast to victory

CENTREVILLE — Democratic incumbents Peter Franchot, Brian Frosh and Ben Cardin easily won re-election Tuesday.

Franchot, the state comptroller was the top vote-getter statewide among all candidates, 1,488,620 votes across Maryland. The Democrat won in nearly every county in the state, including all five Mid-Shore counties, according to unofficial Election Day results.

Republican challenger Anjali Reed Phukan got 587,182 votes statewide, or about 28 percent of the vote.

Cardin, one of Maryland’s two U.S. senators, was re-elected with 1,361,967, 64 percent. Republican challenger Tony Campbell had 659,120 votes (31 percent); unaffiliated candidate Neal Simon had 79,548 (3.7 percent); and Libertarian Arvin Vohra earned 21,209 (1 percent).

Frosh was elected to another term as Maryland attorney general with 1,347,078 (64 percent). Republican challenger Craig Wolf took 755,073 votes (36 percent).

Although Franchot was the top individual vote-getter, one item on the ballot did earn more votes.

Maryland voters overwhelmingly supported Question 1, a state constitutional amendment that will create a “lockbox” for gaming revenues to be used for supplemental funding for public schools. Question 1 was supported by 1,733,028 (89 percent) of those who cast ballots. Question 1 was approved by voters in all 23 counties and Baltimore City.

Voters also approved another constitutional amendment by a large margin. Question 2 will allow same day registration and voting at precinct polling places on Election Day. In early voting and on Tuesday, 1,335,320 (67 percent) cast ballots for Question 2; 654,621 (33 percent) voted against the measure. On the Mid-Shore, a small majority of voters in Queen Anne’s and Caroline counties cast ballots against Question 2.
