WBAL: Maryland Leaders Honor 9/11 Victims

As the nation remembers the 17th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11th, local leaders will be honoring the victims in ceremonies today. Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger will serve lunch to local firefighters in Anne Arundel County today to observe the anniversary by doing good deeds and service. The congressman said he encourages all Marylanders to remember the heroes with simple acts of kindness. In a statement, Sen. Chris Van Hollen encouraged Americans to look for ways to give back. "What is most important as we honor the memories of those who lost their lives on September 11th, as well as those who fought to bring those responsible to justice, is that we can make a difference, every day, by looking for ways to serve our country," he said. Gov. Larry Hogan and Comptroller Peter Franchot will be part of a wreath-laying ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Maryland Fire-Rescue Services Memorial in Annapolis. At 8:30 a.m., Harford County Executive Barry Glassman will lay a wreath outside the main county office building, at 220 S. Main St. in Bel Air, in remembrance of the 3 Harford County residents who were among the nearly 3,000 people who died in the attacks in New York City, Virginia and Pennsylvania. Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman will join local, state and federal elected officials as well as command members of the Howard County Police and fire departments and sheriff's office to honor and pay tribute at 8:46 a.m. by laying a 9/11 Remembrance Wreath in the Garden of Hope at Centennial Park South in Ellicott City. Anne Arundel County Executive Steve Schuh, along with members of the county police and fire departments, will be part of a wreath-laying ceremony at 9:30 a.m. at the county's Sept. 11th memorial at police headquarters on Veterans Highway in Millersville. Baltimore County firefighters are holding their 17th annual "V" Foundation 9/11 Golf Tournament to honor the 343 firefighters who lost their lives on 9/11 and to benefit firefighters affected by cancer. Tee off is set for 8 a.m. at the Greystone Golf Course in White Hall.
