WBAL 1090: Franchot Says Lack of Air Conditioning in Schools ‘Unacceptable’

Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot joined The C4 Show Friday to discuss the first week of school that was cancelled and delayed all week for some Baltimore City and county students.

Franchot put blame on people in the Maryland General Assembly, more specifically the speaker, senate president, chair of the house of the appropriations committee and the senate budget and tax committee chairman.

"For 10 years they have dragged their feet and put every obstacle in front of taking care of these kids and getting them air conditioning," Franchot said, noting how rich the state of Maryland is. "This is unacceptable."

Franchot says he isn't buying the claim from local elected officials touting progress in the matter.

"Kicking and screaming...coming down giving false testimonies to the Board of Public Works about how much progress they're making, sure, they've made a little bit of progress. It's taken them 10 years," Franchot said. "And what do we have for that progress? We have this debacle that occured this week."

Baltimore City and Baltimore County have adjusted schedules all week because of heat.

"We have wasted just a God-awful amount of taxpayer money," Franchot said. "This is a national embarrassment."
